Hanalei Moon and Tide Calendar
The Hanalei Moon and Tide Calendar was a collaborative effort between the Hanalei Watershed Hui, the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, and Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, to raise awareness about the connections between different environmental processes in Hawaiʻi. Traditional Hawaiian knowledge about fish spawning was often based on lunar cycles and seasonal changes, so a portion of the calendar explains how ocean users can observe and determine the spawning season for reef fish in their area. This information can indicate periods when harvesting of fish should be avoided due to peak spawning activity. Other conservation messages related to appropriate harvestable size and life cycle information are also provided to help minimize human impact on ocean resources. The calendar also includes specific place-based information to honor the names and stories of Hanalei.
