Sanctuary Ocean Count volunteers pose for a photo at Ko`olina.

The Sanctuary Ocean Count has been a special project for the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. Not only has the effort helped to contribute to our knowledge of humpback whale populations in Hawai`i, but it has also allowed the staff to work closely with the community and promote public awareness about the mammals that return to the islands each year.

The enthusiasm for the Ocean Count has grown tremendously over the years, making coordination of the project that much more challenging and enjoyable. On behalf of all of the coordinators of the Sanctuary Ocean Count, a heartfelt mahalo (thank you) to our many volunteers who make this annual event possible!

As a thank you to our volunteers, images of past volunteers that participated in the count are now available. Click on the island links below to access the photos.
