Find out more about SPLASH...an international cooperative research effort to understand the population structure of humpback whales across the entire North Pacific. This comprehensive study will take place from 2004 to 2007 and will involve research in many different regions frequented by the North Pacific stock of humpback whales. NEW FACILITIES PLANNED FOR KIHEI

At its Kihei headquarters, the sanctuary is planning on renovating existing facilitites, building a new multi-purpose building on site and removing the existing storage sheds. This new building will house additional office space, storage facilites, and a large space for public programs. Visit the Kihei Facility Project web page for more information.


A WORKSHOP ON COLLISION AVOIDANCE BETWEEN VESSELS AND WHALES
The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary (HIHWNMS), in cooperation with the National Marine Fisheries Service and the State of Hawai‘i, is responsible for protecting humpback whales in Hawai‘i. To assess ship strike risks in Hawai‘i and to identify possible actions to reduce the occurrence of vessel/whale collisions in Hawaiian waters and throughout the National Marine Sanctuary System, NOAA's HIHWNMS Advisory Council and its partners convened a meeting of resource managers, scientists, and representatives of the maritime commmunity. INTERNATIONAL MARINE DEBRIS CONFERENCE

The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary convened the 2000 International Marine Debris Conference with the aim of solving problems associated with derelict fishing gear. Visit the Conference web page to learn more.
