Sanctuary Perspectives

Theme: What does the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary mean to me?

Welcome to Sanctuary Perspectives, a forum for commentary, where experts add new currents of thought to the evolving concept of a national marine sanctuary. Guest writers featured here have contributed in some way to the development of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale Sanctuary. Through their work, their passion, their voice, they can be credited with helping to shape a bright new day in the human relationship to humpback whales.

Despite the apparent commonality of commitment, our commentators are likely to have diverse, even conflicting opinions, when it comes to the question that constitutes the year-long theme of Sanctuary Perspectives: What does the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary mean to me? As if the waters within the Hawaiian sanctuary boundaries comprised a giant ink blot, the query is intended to prompt a very personal vision. The provocative range of answers can only serve to demonstrate that the vast and trackless ocean is also a fertile spawning ground for matters of science, business, religion, culture--a host of fundamental activities that have never ceased to challenge the imagination and enrich everyday existence. The erroneous notion that a sanctuary is simply about girding nature with a layer of protection is once again dispelled, as Sanctuary Perspectives reflects dialogue and dynamism that will shape a better future for our precious ocean resources.

Below are the essays in this thematic series.

Disclaimer

The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary encompasses a large area with many diverse habitats. As varied as these habitats are, so are the thoughts, opinions, and ideas on how to protect, conserve, and manage them. In the Sanctuary Perspectives series, we invite community leaders, scientists, young people, policy-makers, and others to share their thoughts. The opinions expressed in these essays are solely those of the authors. They do not reflect the views and policies of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, the National Marine Sanctuary Program, or NOAA.
