Activities Kids can choose from:
Exploring the Fishpond (Grades 5-7)
Explore and participate in the restoration of the Ko’ie’ie Loko I’a fishpond, located adjacent to the Sanctuary office. Learn about how and why they were built and discover what critters live in it. Come prepared to get wet and bring your snorkel gear.
What’s on the Menu? (Grades 2-4)
What does it take to feed a humpback whale? Come explore who eats the “Veggies”
(limu/seaweeds) of the sea. Students will participate in games, craft activities and explore “What’s on the Menu?”.
Fish, Whales and Turtles (Grades K-1)
Come learn about some of our favorite marine life by participating in some creative fun arts and crafts projects.
Learn about the various critters the live in Hawaii’s intertidal zone. We will use scientific tools to count identify and explore the nearby intertidal community.
Whales, Limu and Turtles for Keikis.
Participate and learn about some of Hawaii popular marine life thourgh fun hands on activities and games.

Reef Fish I.D. Advanced Training

Join Liz Foote and Donna Brown from Project S.E.A. Link and REEF for a free REEF Fish I.D. ADVANCED training workshop course, part of this summer's Great Annual Fish Count. Learn to identify local reef fish and participate in local surveys conducted at the Sanctuary and other REEF sites around Maui. REEF (Reef Environmental Education Foundation) surveys allow volunteer divers and snorkelers to collect and report information on marine fish populations. The data are collected using a fun and easy standardized method, and are housed in a publicly-accessible database on REEF's Website. These data are used by a variety of resource agencies and researchers.

The First annual Maui County Sustainability Fair is being held in conjunction with the Islands of the World IX Conference of the International Small Islands Studies Association (ISISA) taking place at MCC. This event will highlight sustainable practices, techniques and tools that are applicable to small island communities and environments. The fair will provide an informal setting to promote the exchange of information and ideas among interested groups. This is a unique opportunity for students and the public to network with scholars, researchers, and representatives from over 100 island nations who attend the ISISA conference.

Get the Drift & Bag It!

Take part in this event which is part of the International Coastal Cleanup, sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy. The Sanctuary is teaming up with Ahihi Kinau Natural Area Reserve and Community Work Day. Join us as we comb the reserve by foot and kayak to help remove litter and other ocean debris, including nets and derelict fishing gear. Ranger Joe McDonald will also lead a special tour through the reserves fishponds, anchialine ponds, bird habitats and cultural sites after the clean up. Please wear boots and heavy shoes to climb over lava in addition to rugged clothing. Meet at the La Perouse parking lot no later than 7:45am. We will split into three clean up groups, one along the coast, one along the aquarium coast and one group in kayaks. Please call to register by Tuesday, September 5th if you are interested in kayaking space is limited.
Hawaii's annual "Get the Drift and Bag It" cleanup, part of the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup, will be held statewide on Saturday, September 16th.

The overabundance of invasive Limu has been an ongoing problem in Hawaii for many years. Scientists believe this overabundance may be attributed to many factors such as, eutrophication (increased runoff of nutrients) of nearshore waters, decreased levels of herbivores, and the competition of non-native, invasive limu. Join Meghan Dailer, a UH Limu researcher as she discusses the Limu problem in Maui. This will be your chance to get up close and personal! Come learn to identify limu through touch, taste and smell and check them out under a microscope. Meghan will also discuss possible management and mitigation measures.

Kihei beaches are under limu attack! We need your help. Join the Sanctuary’s Citizen Scientist program and assist Sanctuary Staff with Limu collection surveys. Learn how to identify limu, tow small Opai nets, measure the biomass (weight) of limu washing up on beaches, and set and measure transects in the fishpond and adjacent waters by snorkeling. The data we collect will be used by the University of Hawaii to assess seasonality among algae blooms and phase shifts between species.
