Sanctuary Holds 2009 Ocean Art, Poetry, and Short Story Contest
February 2009 was Humpback Whale Awareness Month in Hawai`i and the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary held a special Ocean Contest. The Ocean Contest offered students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade an opportunity to show how they feel about Hawai`i’s humpback whales and the ocean. Enthusiastic students from around the state submitted art, short stories, and poetry.
Over 550 entries were received from students around the state as well as around the country. Winners were selected by marine conservation staff from various organizations as well as by local graphic designers. They received award certificates and great prizes in the mail. In addition, every student that entered received a membership in the Ocean Guardian Kids Club and a special humpback whale packet.
Congratulations to the winners of the 2009 Ocean Contest!
