Sanctuary Holds 2008 Ocean Art, Poetry, and Essay Contest
February 2008 was Humpback Whale Awareness Month in Hawai`i and the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary held a special Ocean Contest. The Ocean Contest offered students in grades kindergarten through sixth grade an opportunity to show how they feel about Hawai`i’s humpback whales and the ocean. Enthusiastic students from around the state submitted art, essays, and poetry.

All entries were displayed at the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve education alcove, on the island of O`ahu, for public viewing throughout the month of February. The contest entries were judged by the public following a special whale month lecture at Hanauma Bay. Art contest winners were selected for each grade and overall winners were selected for essay and poetry entries.
