A very special tradition happens each Thanksgiving on the island of Lanai when the Coon Brothers and their employees at Trilogy Excursions and Lanai City Service donate their time and resources to give each family on Lanai a turkey for Thanksgiving. This has been happening for almost two decades and this year it will take place the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Because the event really brings the community together, the Coon Brothers saw it as an opportunity and decided to invite organizations, agencies and businesses to join in by providing education and outreach to the island.
The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary has participated in this event for the past several years by offering hands-on education activities and information on current efforts to protect Hawaii’s ocean resources. “This event offers the people of Lanai a chance to learn about the sanctuary, which extends around their entire island,” stated Allen Tom, Pacific Islands Regional Director for the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries.
According to Trilogy Excursions CEO Jim Coon, “We are just the magnet that brings the Lanai community together on this day, but it is the many agencies and organizations that are gathered here to reach out to the Lanai community that really have the lasting value. I’m glad that I can provide a venue for the sanctuary to share important information with the public on the benefits of a sanctuary to these waters.”
Again this year there are several other businesses and associations that are joining the Coon Brothers in donating goods and services for this outreach. The Maui Hotel and Lodging Association is providing a bag of rice for each family. Young Brothers is donating the shipping to Lanai. Lanai Trucking is donating the on-island transportation of the container and Bank of Hawaii is donating recyclable bags, among others.
