Maps

The maps below depict sanctuary boundaries on base maps with ocean depth and three-dimentional bathymetry. There are also a number of sanctuary boundary maps superimposed on nautical charts at various scales.

Ocean Depth with Sanctuary Boundary

The map shows the major Hawaiian Islands ocean depths, and the location of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. The sanctuary is comprised of five separate areas abutting six of the major islands of the State of Hawai`i. The five areas of the sanctuary cover relatively shallow offshore areas built up from the sea floor by the development of the Hawaiian Islands chain. (Sources. Hawaii topography: USGS DEM, Ocean bathymetry: ETOPO5, Humpback Whale NMS boundary: NOAA).

Three-dimensional Map with Sanctuary Boundary

This 3D perspective map shows the Hawaiian Islands chain from the sea floor. The boundary of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is indicated in pink. Though underwater, the Sanctuary actually lies near the summit of a massive undersea volcanic mountain range. (Click on image for larger view). (Sources. Hawaii topography: USGS DEM, Ocean bathymetry: ETOPO5, Humpback Whale NMS boundary: NOAA).

Sanctuary Boundaries Depicted on NOAA Nautical Charts

The series of maps below show the sanctuary boundary on nautical charts. The charts should NOT be used for purposes of navigation. Click on the chart number to download a portable document format (pdf) of the chart.

PLEASE NOTE: The pdf files are very large and may require considerable time for downloading.
