Sanctuary Advisory Council Application

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED!

The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is currently seeking interested individuals to fill 7 of 15 non-governmental seats on the Sanctuary Advisory Council (Council). In addition. alternate members are being sought for 2 seats.

The vacant seats include primary and alternate members for: Business/Commerce, Citizen-At-Large, Commercial Shipping, Conservation, Ocean Recreation, Tourism, and Whale Watching. The representatives that presently sit on the Council were selected in 2006 and serve two-year terms (terms are staggered to allow for continuity within the council). Additional vacant seats that you may apply for include the alternate seats for Fishing, and Native Hawaiian.  The term for these alternate seats will be one-year.

The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council was formed in 1996 for the purpose of providing advice to the Sanctuary Manager on the management and protection of the sanctuary. The Council, through its members, also serves as a liaison to the community regarding sanctuary issues and acts as a conduit, relaying the community's interests, concerns and management needs to the sanctuary.

At this time the sanctuary is opening up the selection process to the community and providing applications to interested individuals. The deadline for application submittal is November 15, 2008.

Before submitting the application, please read the Council Charter and the Council Handbook to familiarize yourself with the Council's roles and responsibilities. Paperwork Reduction Act

The information obtained through this application process will be used to determine the qualifications of the applicant for membership on the sanctuary advisory council. The NMSP intends affirmatively to disclose the applications only to NMSP staff and other members of the review panel. However, the NMSP may be required to disclose the applications in response to a court order, a Congressional request, or a request from the public under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). If disclosure is requested under the FOIA, the NMSP will endeavor to protect the privacy of applicants by withholding personal information such as home addresses and telephone numbers. In contrast, statements of philosophy or opinions contained in the application would likely be released. Applying for membership on the Council is voluntary.

Public reporting burden for this collection of information is estimated to average one hour per response, including the time for reviewing instructions, searching existing data sources, gathering the data needed, and completing and reviewing the collection of information. Send comments regarding this burden estimate or any other aspect of this collection of information, including suggestions for reducing this burden to National Marine Sanctuary Program, 1305 East West Highway, N/ORM6, Silver Spring, Maryland 29010.

Notwithstanding any other provision of law, no person is required to respond to, nor shall any person be subject to a penalty for failure to comply with, a collection of information subject to the requirements of the Paperwork Reduction Act, unless that collection of information displays a currently valid OMB Control Number.
