Visioning the Future of Aquaculture in Hawai'i
The University of Hawai'i Aquaculture Program and NOAA's Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary co-hosted "Ho'olālā i ka mahii'a o kēia mua aku", a workshop focused on visioning the future of aquaculture in Hawai'i.
The workshop provided an opportunity to share knowledge, exchange different viewpoints and discuss the future of aquaculture in the main Hawaiian Islands. Participants included cultural and fishpond practitioners, community members, farmers, business and food industry representatives, subject matter experts, state and federal agency representatives and marine resource managers.
The sanctuary is currently involved in a multi-year management plan review process to update the existing management plan. Following a 90-day public scoping and comment period in summer and fall 2010, a list of priority issues was developed to guide the sanctuary's management plan review. Offshore development, which includes aquaculture and alternative energy projects, was one of the top issues identified by the public. The sanctuary advisory council has been tasked to further examine these emerging issues and to provide the sanctuary with management recommendations through a comprehensive working group process. Information from the aquaculture workshop will be used to inform any management recommendations that are developed and submitted to the full council for consideration and final approval.
