2009 Ocean Contest - Contest Closed - Check Back for Future Opportunities

Art, Poetry and Short Story Contest Open to Students in Grades K-8

Participate in the 2009 Humpback Whale Month Ocean Contest by submitting your ocean artwork, poem or short story to the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary and become a member of the Ocean Guardian Kids Club.

The purpose of the NOAA National Marine Sanctuaries Ocean Guardian Kids Club is to encourage you to explore your natural surroundings to form a sense of personal connection to the ocean. The Kids Club offers you an opportunity to express your insights, observations and understanding of your natural environment through the creation of visual art, poetry, and original stories. All K-8 students are eligible and encouraged to join!

Entrants will receive an Ocean Guardian Kids Club membership card and for those handing in their work within February -Humpback Whale Awareness Month- you will also receive an exclusive Humpback Whale Kids Packet. So don’t wait too long! Get creative and submit your work now. All entries are due in the office by 12:00 noon on March 4, 2009. Please note that entries will not be returned.

GUIDELINES FOR ARTWORK
Draw and color a picture of a humpback whale, a scene showing how people can take care of our ocean or simply your favorite Hawai’i ocean scene. The artwork should not exceed 11” by 17” in size. Acceptable media are: paint, pencil, markers, ink, crayon, chalk, acrylic or pastel (fixed), cloth, and collage. All submissions must be done on paper that will allow for duplication, display or framing. Please, no notebook or typing paper, and do not mat, mount, laminate, frame or fold artwork. The artwork submission must be accompanied by the official Ocean Guardian Kids Club membership form.

GUIDELINES FOR POETRY OR SHORT STORY
Write a poem or short story either about humpback whales, how people can take care of our ocean or simply about Hawai’i’s ocean. This can be either handwritten or typed. Poems should not exceed 20 lines in length. Short stories should not exceed 200 words in length. The poetry or short story submission must be accompanied by the official Ocean Guardian Kids Club membership form.

WINNING ENTRIES
Winners from each category (art, poem, short story) will receive award certifications by mail and will have their entry featured on this website
